North-west parts of India, ‘KajariPurnima’ in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh, ‘NariyalPurnima’ in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka, ‘Upakarman’ or ‘AvaniAvittam’ in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and ‘Pavitropana’ in certain parts of Gujarat.

  • Jammu – Jammu has the most interesting way of celebrating this auspicious occasion with kite flying. The kite flying festival begins from almost a month before the festival and all age groups enjoy the occasion.   • West Bengal and Odisha – It is called JulanPurnima in both the states. In these two states, people start the day by worshipping Lord Ram and Seeta

  • Maharashtra – The fisherfolks of the coasts throws coconuts into the sea as an offering. The traditional RakshaBandhan is celebrated after the worship of the sea
  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of Odisha – This festival is basically for all the males in the family. It is celebrated on a full moon night. The Brahmins celebrate this occasion by taking a dip in the water to wash away their sins. After the occasion, the old thread tied on the body is replaced with a new one. They promise to be good and perform good actions in the coming year.
